[Review] Pete's Dragon (6/10)

Walt Disney Studios continues with reinventing their animated classics and Pete's Dragon, unfortunately, is nowhere near Cinderella.

Whether we're talking about that Disney magic or just being an enjoyable piece of entertainment, both qualities were sorely missing.

A lot of complaints of this movie have been the look and personality of the dragon, which were more like a dog. And it was a pity that Disney didn't take the risk of creating or giving their interpretation of what a dragon would be like.

But my main complaint would be that there just wasn't enough going on in the story to keep things interesting. The whole second act was almost a snooze fest.

And the ending should have been more emotional and heartfelt but it was almost just glossed over. It was a chance taken by Disney on writer-director David Lowery; and while its always good to see a semi-big budget project given to a new director, but in this case I didn't think he delivered.

The only thing going for the movie was the cast. Robert Redford was like the anchor that grounded the fantasy element and brought the humanity. Karl Urban could have been a one-note bad guy but I liked how he turned out.

Bryce Dallas Howard and Wes Bentley were adequate while newcomer Oakes Fegley had enough charisma and talent to be acting opposite something that wasn't real and made it believable.

Unfortunately, this movie won't be something that I would want to revisit again anytime soon.
