[Review] The Accountant (7.5/10)

In between Ben Affleck's busy schedule of shooting Justice League and The Batman solo movie, he has found time to do a much, much smaller movie. And it comes in the form of The Accountant.

I had high hopes for this after watching the trailers. And it didn't disappoint.

One has to wonder if Affleck's superhero physique would get in the way of a small movie like this one. The answer is no, because even that is written in to the movie.

What director Gavin O'Connor did well was telling the backstory of Affleck's character by sprinkling flashbacks into the main story. The pacing was done well that the jumping back and forth didn't detract the audience from their enjoyment of the movie.

There is also a competent supporting cast of J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal and Anna Kendrick that, though not as effective as they could have been, but served their purpose well. I wouldn't have put Kendrick as second billing because she actually didn't have too big a part to play here.

And every time Kendrick is onscreen, she changes the tone of the movie a little bit and I can't help but wonder how intentional was that from O'Connor. But I'm not saying that as a pure negative because it didn't distract me all that much. It was just noticeable.

The other thing which was a negative for me was how everything ties in together in the end, making this world that the movie is set in feels very small and coincidental.

But I liked how this movie forces you to think and link things together. It's definitely not a popcorn movie that sends you home without anything to talk about.
