[Review] Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children (4.5/10)
Tim Burton has lost me now. Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children seemed to have highlighted all the shortcomings of this director whom I considered brilliant not so long ago.
Granted I haven't seen Big Eyes (can you blame me?), but other than Frankenweenie, Burton has been raking up some bad rep; to a point where even my perception of him is now skewed. This movie just emphasised it.
First was the acting. Between Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Terence Stamp and Ella Purnell; nobody stood out except for how bad the acting were. Even for someone as funny as Chris O'Dowd, he looked lifeless.
Then was the storytelling, which progressed way too slowly in some parts and lost me quite a few times as I wasn't engaged.
Finally, the action sequences at the end, which should have been a highlight a la X-Men (which this film has been compared to a lot). But Burton just doesn't do action well. It felt very disjointed with some characters disappearing for a long time and timeline also didn't add up.
Some of the kids were really powerful but they only used their "peculiarity" once. These kids need Prof. X to teach them, not Miss Peregrine to take care of them.
The only one that was interesting was Samuel L. Jackson's character and the monsters, plus how some parts got really dark.
Which got me wondering, Burton might have struggled when creating this movie because some scenes like the one mentioned above were really dark; but then again, the overall style of storytelling was meant more for the kids than an adult like me.
This was a very disappointing outing and I'm not expecting to see a franchise being born.
