[Review] Trolls (7/10)
Trolls has put out some very bland trailers over the course of their marketing campaign and I have never had any interest to watch it even if it has Anna Kendrick attached to it.
But then as the summer went on and Justin Timberlake's song kept playing over the radio, and then word-of-mouth started creating some positive buzz; I finally decided to catch it. And no regrets.
It's not going to win Best Animated Movie or anything like that but there were some genuinely humorous moments that got me laughing, as well as some touching moments that so ever slightly pulled at my heartstrings; and capping it off with a good but albeit on the surface message about happiness.
The jokes in the trailers translated better than I expected in the context of the movie and its story. The songs sprinkled throughout the movie were not painful to sit through, especially when it's Kendrick singing. And the pacing of the movie was just right to not lose my interest at any given point.
My biggest criticism would be that this movie is way too happy for me because by the end of it everyone is one big happy family. Understandably it's for the kids, so I won't complain that much. But the other criticism would be that there's nothing original about the script as everything was just a rehash from something else. And all the other voice actors like James Corden, Russell Brand and Gwen Stefani were wasted with very little to do.
Why pay for all these names when you're not going to utilise them to the fullest?
But overall, it's enjoyable enough with characters that you could easily care for to keep the entertainment value up. And for the kids, this is certainly a good one to visit.
