[Editorial] Five Plot Points To Make Rogue One End Better
I'm not saying Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is not a good movie. It is a very good movie. But unlike most of everyone who has watched it, the issues in this movie affected my overall enjoyment more than others.
Here's me script-doctoring 5 plot points which I feel would give the ending a more emotional pull. In chronological order:
1) You killed my father.
Jyn Erso failed to convince the Alliance to get the plans hidden by her father, Galen. Even that all-important line from the trailer - "Rebellions are built on hope" fell miserably (when it shouldn't because that could even be the tagline for the movie).
When someone in the Alliance meet asked why they should be listening to Jyn, let alone trust her; her reply could have been, "Because you killed my father and I'm still here trying to help you." Mic drop.
2) Rebellions are built on hope.
This tagline failed to make an impact in the movie but to the audience's impression, it looked like it was the turning point for the Rebellion.
Two alternatives here.
First. We should have seen Cassion Andor rallied the troops with a speech that brought back the line "Rebellions are built on hope" and have a positive effect.
Second. After Jyn stormed out of the meeting because no one was on her side from my first point above, Cassion once again could have used that same line to lift her spirits up and in doing so, change the fate of that line with the audience as well.
3) Die trying.
Some random Trooper lobbed a grenade into the shuttle while Bodhi Rook sat there doing nothing.
The grenade should have entered right when Bodhi was speaking with Admiral Raddus explaining about sending the plans up. Before he finished explaining, the grenade landed inside the shuttle. There and then he had to make the decision, whether to try and throw the grenade out and saving himself, or deliver the message knowing he will die immediately after.
That would have had more of an emotional impact on the audience.
4) The Force is with me.
My biggest beef with characterization is here.
We all saw Chirrut Imwe dodge blasters on Jedha. Why couldn't he do the same here? Instead he started chanting and hoped that the blasters would miss him. Which they did. And what does he do after that? Smiled and gave up.
He should have ran out dodging as many blaster fire as he could but as he got closer to the switch he got hit. Finding the switch and getting hit again. And in his dying breath he threw the switch.
5) Down in a Baze of glory.
Baze Malbus seeing his best friend getting hit, ran selflessly returning fire against a horde of Troopers and receiving hits in return.Him sacrificing himself allowed Chirrut to successfully throw the switch and gave the Rebel Alliance a new hope.
I have said it in my review. Gareth Edwards has one job and that was to create deaths that pulled at the heartstrings of all of us. Instead, I felt nothing!
The only memorable death was K-2SO and it went downhill after that. This should have achieved what the Dirty Dozen did with even more ease, because it's Star Wars!
