[Review] The Witch (8.5/10)

I'm surprised that writer-director Robert Eggers does not have something big lined up right now, or no big Hollywood studio has snatched him up for their upcoming horror flick.

But maybe I should not be surprised and should be hopeful that Eggers will stay true to himself and only do projects that are passionate to him, just like The Witch, which he wrote and directed it as his first full-length feature.

Now this is the kind of suspensful horror that I like and enjoy. Even though it is a really slow burn, but the storytelling is so entertaining and gripping; with an ending that paid off greatly.

Eggers is masterful in creating the atmosphere in this olden English countryside that was highly necessary in the context of the story. But it was the way he shot each scene, from something as simple as chopping wood - every time that scene came on, it told a different meaning and mood. And without words, he added even more to the next scene.

There were no loud bangs or jump scares, but the tension and suspense, and those close-up shots could even give James Wan a run for his money.

A good movie entertains the audience, but a great one will leave with the audience in the sense that so much more conversations could be had when the credits start to roll.
