[Review] Lights Out (4/10)

Turning his horror short into a full length feature wasn't the most brilliant thing to do but it was inevitable. David F. Sanberg had such a great idea for a scary sequence that everyone ate it up on YouTube.

But to create a back story, a whole premise and even more of that sequence; it became a typical Hollywood horror movie. And with Eric Heisserer providing the script, he has been more miss than hit in his career. Actually he has written one of the worst screenplays I have ever seen in Paul Walker's Hours.

I'm actually surprised that there were a lot more critics who enjoyed this movie than those who didn't.

The cast here wasn't the best apart from Maria Bello, but she didn't have to do much. Teresa Palmer was just serviceable but no one else was any better.

The worst thing was the supernatural being has no fixed rules in this universe. Sometimes she could control the lights, but only if it served the story to move it along. And if she was afraid of the light, a back attack would be the easiest thing; but I guess she prefers to have a fair fight.

The only consolation here was that the movie was less than 90 minutes long and so it ended when it should have.

And for Sandberg himself, this has scored him the directing role for Annabelle 2; before returning for the sequel to Lights Out.
