[Review] Moana (8.5/10)
I guess The Rock has a reason to go to the Oscars next year. In a year that every animated movie has significant flaws; Moana, for me, is the best animated movie of the year.
And I'm not saying it has no flaws because it did. For a running time of 103 minutes, it felt much longer than that. I even thought it was 2 hours. And that's because there were a few parts that just dragged on for too long and I felt that some scenes could have been cut shorter and it would still have kept its emotional core.
That was probably my biggest complaint for the movie, because when the movie hit its high, the lows went too low just for the story to build up to the high again.
The cast was fantastic, and Dwayne Johnson didn't take me out of the movie, not once. The highlight definitely was newcomer Auli'i Cravalho, whose voice acting and singing were just perfect. She was the Moana character.
Another highlight was also Jemaine Clement whose singing made me thought that he was a popular British singer. And that whole section with his monster character was pure entertainment.
The whole story was as original as it can be. There was a strong sense of adventure and moral, and add in those songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Mark Mancina, they can really tug at your heartstrings.
I also liked how there was no love interest at all; and it's focus was purely on Moana's one drive and one goal, and what she was willing to do to get the job done. And that's why, as a story in the animated world, this should take home the Oscars.
Make no mistake, this was not a Pixar movie, it was purely Walt Disney Animation Studios. And this year, Disney has topped Pixar.
