[Review] Your Name (7.5/10)
I heard a lot of good things about Your Name and was able to catch it at the cinema. But through all that hype, I was a little disappointed that it did not impress me more.
I would say Shinkai Makoto directed the first two acts very, very well. From the opening of the movie, to learning what was actually happening (I did not watch any trailers for it), and then to the two lead characters figuring things out; these were just so entertaining, fun, and I found myself laughing quite a few times.
But the third act was where things started falling apart. When there is some form of time-travelling or body-swapping going on, the storyteller need to establish some ground rules to keep things consistent.
Perhaps it was because I missed a couple of lines or got lost in the translation, in the third act however, things started to get confusing because new rules popped up or old rules were broken. Some were done so that the movie could move a certain way, and that is just lousy and lazy storytelling.
Also, a few pivotal moments dragged on like a bad serial drama; making the movie way too long in the third act.
As a whole, it was still worth the watch and as an animated movie, this was something special and a very original piece of science fiction. That alone was worth the price of admission. I just wished the ending could have been done better.
And I love this poster. Had the movie been better, I would love to hang it on my wall.
