[Review] Manchester By The Sea (8.5/10)

The best thing about Manchester By The Sea, and probably brought the movie to the next level, was Casey Affleck.

This role for Affleck fit him like a glove. I have seen a handful of his performance, and each time he is always like HTC, quietly brilliant; but never too different from each one (though I have yet to see Triple 9).

However, this one seemed to be a match made in heaven. Without Affleck, this movie would not have been this good. It was slow in pace, dragged its feet in certain areas even though there was always things going on. But Affleck made every scene watchable.

My favourite scene by him was when he pulled a gun. His expression and performance just in that scene won it for me, so much so that I would say he should win this month's Academy Awards.

Credit would also need to go to Kenneth Lonergan, whose direction, pacing and tone has been consistent throughout. He also got Michelle Williams delivering her best once again even though she only had a few short scenes. There were also great supporting turns from Kyle Chandler and Lucas Hedges.

Another plus for this movie was also the cinematography from Jody Lee Lipes; whether it was in the big city or the small town by the sea, they all gave the us the feel of the environment that they were shot at.
