[Review] Kong: Skull Island (6.5/10)

Kong: Skull Island promised to be an entertaining flick about King Kong, but did it fulfill that promise?

On the one hand, we got exactly what was expected. The movie also wasted no time in introducing Kong to us in his full glory and power. But on the other, the story progression was quite horrible.

Even though we have Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John C. Reilly, Brie Larson and John Goodman leading the way, only Jackson and Goodman were of any good. Competent actors like Hiddleston and Larson were mishandled by director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, quite surprisingly so considering he directed the young actors so well in Kings Of Summer.

The dialogue were mostly rubbish, so much so that not even Oscar-caliber actors could deliver them with the consistency of their characterizations. Again, very surprising considering another Oscar-caliber writer Dan Gilroy was involved.

What I just couldn't figure out was why direct the actors to have so little expression when they first encountered mythical creatures? If I had a camera in my hand I would be snapping away non-stop. This was supposed to be the discovery of a lifetime, nay, of an era! And the characters just walked through it like a zoo.

But if you were going in just for the action of Kong versus other creatures, then yes, it had that going for it. However, I do prefer some more substance even in a mindless popcorn flick, which this movie shouldn't have casually settled for.
