[Review] Logan (8.5/10)

Logan has almost been the movie I wanted it to be. And it is definitely one of the best X-Men movies out there.

The mood, the tone, the pacing, all were very consistent and as dramatic as I had wanted them to be.

Hugh Jackman's supposedly final outing as Wolverine, and Patrick Stewart recently announced that this would be his final X-movie as well; both of which were superb in the final performance, delivering heartbreaking storyarcs.

And that R-rating was no joke. There has never been a more brutal and bloody comic book adaptation on the silver screen. Logan's claws were everywhere!

So where did director James Mangold let me down? It's just frustrating to see the same issue in The Wolverine being carried into this movie. The ending of both movies just did not come together the way that the first two acts have set up.

In The Wolverine, there was that baffling sequence where Wolverine was held back by the ninjas, but he could have used his claws to cut the harnesses. Same here when Logan had a harpoon in his leg, why not slice through it?

And in that same sequence in The Wolverine, the cinematic cut, we did not get the full sequence of Wolverine having one of the best fight scenes with the ninjas as it was completely taken out but included in the director's cut.

In Logan, the X-23 or Laura sliced and diced her way through the Reavers in their first meet-up, but failed to do the same in the third act, especially when she has back up, too.

This was frustrating to me because if I have these questions in my mind, then the movie's enjoyability was affected.

But these were all in the third act. The first two acts however were almost perfect. This was the portrayal I wanted to see an older Wolverine and Professor X. The jaded and almost defeated Xavier cursing to no end, and Wolverine suffering as his healing factor no longer worked properly.

A dystopian movie that we never thought we would get in such a serious, dramatic tone; while at its core, it really was about the family that Professor X had always dreamed of since the very beginning.

This was a very beautiful end to Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart's portrayal of their X-Men.
