[Review] Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 (8/10)

James Gunn has done it again - proving that Guardians Of The Galaxy was not a fluke.

Bringing back the characters that we love, bringing back the style of comedy that made the first one so special, and bringing another quality Marvel movie that will be as memorable as the first one was. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 was a great comedy first, action flick second. But still a great space opera like the first.

Without the need for introductions or for the audience to learn each individual's characteristics, Gunn was able to explore more and have even more fun with their idiosyncrasies. The result was often funny when it came to the group's chemistry and dialogue. And that's entertainment at its best.

Still, as good as the movie was, there was still the dreaded lull in the middle of the second act. When Star-Lord finally got to accept that Ego was his father, and traveled to his planet to learn about his heritage, without Gunn cutting to the other characters, that section would have been even more boring. Fortunately, there were enough characters to focus on to keep the pace up.

I also found another element that was disappointing, which was a lot of the space battle were against drones. Marvel continues to project grandeur by introducing fodder that are inconsequential. Although in this movie it was a smaller part, but still it was there.

I was afraid that one of the comedic sequences was completely spoilt by the trailers in regards to Baby Groot taking instructions from Rocket about the bomb. That part was fully expected as the trailers played the entire thing, but what came after was even more hilarious and the trailer's section served only as a built-up.

And in the end, such a touching and heartfelt moment that was carefully architectured by Gunn, building up the parentage element with one so that we the audience could feel for another. A brilliant storytelling and Gunn has outdone himself in this respect.

And it's no longer a secret now that it was announced a week earlier, there were 5 end credit scenes and one of them has introduced an upcoming character that a lot of fans have been waiting for.

My favourite scene? Like the first movie, it's that shot when the title came on covering almost the entire screen. The first one was beautiful, this one was equally special.
