[Review] The Runaways (6.5/10)
For a biopic about a rock band or singer, the beats of the movie seems to always be the same. The fun and interesting forming of the band or getting discovered, becoming famous, drugs, downfall and then reconciliation if any.
Such was the story, also, for The Runaways, though this movie was out back in 2010 so there had been more of the same along the way. But what kept it interesting was getting to know the characters; I only knew Joan Jett and not Cherie Currie, who was the lead singer.
And then there was the cast. This was probably the best I have seen of Kristen Stewart, as well as a next level of acting for Dakota Fanning since I Am Sam.
The scene stealer however was Michael Shannon, who should have had a Best Supporting nod. He made his character so much more interesting than any of the kids in the movie.
What was disappointing was that we did not really get to meet the rest of The Runaways. Even a very competent actress like Alia Shawkat had zero lines.
Director Floria Sigismondi delivered the best she could with her first and so far, only, full length feature film. She kept the pacing consistent while bringing out great performances from her actors.
But the story itself was not a very interesting nor captivating one. And there wasn't really any payoff in the end that the movie just plateaued from the start of the third act.
The only upside to it was getting to know how about The Runaways, even though if it was just from one person's point of view - which was Currie's as she wrote the book which the movie was based on.
