[Review] Why Him? (5.5/10)
The good thing about Why Him?, and the only reason why it did not tank, was that both leads, James Franco and Bryan Cranston, did not phone in their performances for a paycheck.
This could have easily gone down the old and beaten path with its unimaginative storyline, and therefore, the entertainment value would have to come from its cast.
Luckily, Franco and Cranston worked very well together. I have seen Franco turned in silly performances but this one was kept in check. He did not go overboard, and even if he did it was done right under the direction of John Hamburg.
Also, Zoey Deutch and Megan Mullaly added more chemistry into the mix. But a clear standout was Keegan Michael Key - every time he appeared onscreen, he would steal scenes from everyone else.
But a lot of the chuckles came from the amount of swearing in front of the younger brother played by Griffin Gluck. And it's not really from the script itself. Therefore, there was very little originality and that's why it was just entertaining enough.
