[Editorial] Wonder Woman Should Lead Justice League
There has not been a lot of chatter about this subject online, or not that I am aware of, so I thought I'd put my views out there.
Wonder Woman has come and gone (for most parts of the world) and is universally loved. A rare occurrence if you look at the history of the current DC projects from Man Of Steel to Suicide Squad. None of those movies have come close to what Wonder Woman has achieved commercially and critically (by the time it finishes its run as it still trails Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice in the worldwide market, not by much).
Henry Cavill nor Ben Affleck has received this amount of love and praise as Gal Gadot has portraying one of they trinity of DC characters. And she has arrived not a moment too soon.
So now that Zack Snyder has stepped down as director for Justice League and with Joss Whedon stepping in to do reshoots and edits for the movie that are going on at the moment, I wholeheartedly believe that Whedon should place Wonder Woman in the forefront for this first Justice League movie.
(Look at some of these previous promotional material for Justice League, they already have Wonder Woman standing in the centre.)
Even though in the comic books, Wonder Woman has never led Justice League (disclaimer: not to my knowledge as I did not grow up with DC comics). It has always been Superman in the lead, with Batman pulling some strings from the shadows here and there.
But with the popularity of Wonder Woman on the silver screen now, and I have no choice but to use Marvel as a reference here; she should be portrayed as the Iron Man of DCEU.
In the MCU, Iron Man has been the superhero that kind of gels the whole universe together because 1) he was the first superhero to be portrayed onscreen 2) he is the most popular superhero for the MCU and this generation's fans.
Although Iron Man has been the leader of The Avengers during certain runs in the comic books, as well as the leader for the West Coast Avengers and the short-lived Force Works; but this generation of moviegoers do not know that! They don't care what went on in the comic books or the accuracy of certain facts when they go watch movies.
And while Captain America will always be seen as the leader of the Avengers onscreen, Iron Man has always been the one that kind of saves the day at the very last minute - think both the Avengers movies.
So that's why, with those arguments put forth, I believe that the studio and the writers should now tweak their script so that Wonder Woman can play a much bigger role going forward, have more screentime and can ultimately saves the day at the last minute, like Iron Man.
Because, let's face it, fans subconsciously prefer to see their favourite characters do the heavy lifting for the team; so that there can be an emotional reaction and response towards the movie when it ends.
