[Review] Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (4/10)

This was another unfortunate example of why comedy sequels don't do well. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising rehashed the same jokes from the first movie but in another format, failing miserably in the process.

I used to think that Chloe Grace Moretz was the next big thing. But even with opportunities, she has not delivered since the promise of Kick-Ass. The movies where she led, Carrie and The 5th Wave, both under-performed. And so I foolishly had my hopes up with this movie, thinking she could really shine by bringing some freshness into this comedy which the original movie was great.

But again, it didn't work. Am I foolish not to believe that it wasn't Moretz's fault? With Carrie, it was the horrible directing. With The 5th Wave, that just wasn't a movie that should have been made. Kick-Ass 2 just wasn't directed by Matthew Vaughn. And here, once again, seems like it was the material that did not live up to the first one.

The dialogue was not good to say the least. Things moved forward only because the actors themselves had to say what the progress was. Usually when this happens, that means the movie is bad. So this was just to see how bad the movie in its entirety was.

There were just a few laughing moments. Mostly from the supporting cast of Ike Barinholtz. The leads, Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne and Zac Efron all felt dull and desperate to be funny. And Dave Franco was sorely missed in this movie.

Director Nicholas Stoller really dropped the ball on this one, after what was such a promising first movie.
