[Review] Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets (6.5/10)
I have never read the comics for Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets, so that's my disclaimer right off the bat; because my first question would be, why are Valerian and Laureline have to be portrayed as so young because they just did not fit the bill.
I thought Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne did the best they could, acting mostly with green screens.
And The Fifth Element, this was not. Although the fun factor was there for half the movie, I thought ultimately this was just too much. The world that Luc Besson envisioned was too complicated and in the end, didn't make much sense.
For one, and let me give a SPOILER ALERT, from the exchange between Valerian and Laureline about what they believed in towards the end, the alien should have said that Valerian was the wrong one to be chosen. And yet, that whole exchange, a pivotal scene at the very least, was just brushed aside.
But just throughout the movie, there were a lot of subplots that may or may not factor in into the story; but they were just nice to have. That particular one that detoured into a whole new environment, which also introduced Rihanna as one of the worst acting talent from the cast - even if it was just voice acting, the character itself was completely unnecessary and took up too much time. The only good thing here, and I use the word "good" quite loosely, was that it gave us Ethan Hawke.
Still, why the movie was made was because of the CGI capability of today. And it seemed like Besson threw in everything but the kitchen sink. Right from the start, the world he created looked so beautiful that even in confined spaces, aesthetically there was nothing wrong.
It's just that 30 minutes into the movie, after all the grandeur died down a little, we were left with a story that just did not quite sell. And mainly because I felt that the two lead characters were 10 years too young to fit into their description.
But as a space operatic adventure, there definitely was some fun to be had.
