[Review] Atomic Blonde (4/10)

The downfall of Atomic Blonde was its marketing. All the trailers looked action-packed and stylish from start to finish, and I thought I would be gasping for air because of all the cool action pieces that would leave me holding my breath. Apparently not.

This movie was very dull, as dull as the colour filter that David Leitch used for the movie. Not that it was a bad idea because it did give the right feel for the atmosphere and the winter season that it was set in.

But whenever the action started, I had no complaints. The fight scenes felt so real because the way the characters were gasping for air and struggling to just stand up, those felt and looked realistic.

The biggest problem was that the movie did not have a lot of action scenes. There was a small one in the first act, a huge one that did impress at the beginning of the third act, and a very tiny one towards the end; which was ridiculous for all the promises that the marketing had made.

That big action set was really good, though. It started in the stairwell and then the big chunk of it was inside an apartment. And all that was shot like there was no cut in the filming, just like how Birdman was shot; with clever ways of cutting and sewing scenes together.

Also, another positive for the movie was yet again another great performance by James McAvoy. While Charlize Theron played a convincing spy agent and delivered believable action sequences, McAvoy stole a lot of scenes just by his acting skills alone as he did not have any big action scenes.

However, all the positives could not save the movie from being completely dull and unnecessary convoluted. By the end of the movie, with a couple of twists here and there, it left me confused more than entertained.
