[Review] The Edge Of Seventeen (8/10)

Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig as her first feature film, The Edge Of Seventeen was filled with humour and heart.

From its trailers, I actually expected a lot more laughs but instead there were more heartfelt moments, which I also did not mind all that much in place of what was lacking.

And Craig had great tools to work with in Hailee Steinfeld and Blake Jenner; who all gave wonderful performances - especially Steinfeld of course as the story centres around her character and her being in almost every frame.

The brother-sister relationship between Steinfeld and Jenner was the foundation and backbone for the story and it played out beautifully even though they did not share the screen all that much. Haley Lu Richardson who played the best friend did not feel completely right for the role a few times but ultimately still served her purpose.

Also, Woody Harrelson here was in one of his more subdued performances. He is definitely one of the best of his generation working right now in Hollywood as you see him go from this friendly and harmless school teacher to a ruthless killer in The War For The Planet Of The Apes.

This was definitely one of the brighter coming-of-age movies in recent years that warmed the heart and felt realistic at the same time. It did not come with a big ending but chose to instead go out quietly but effectively in its softness.
