[Review] American Made (7.5/10)
It is definitely good to see Tom Cruise in these smaller-budget, action-less movies that really show off his acting chops now and then.
Plus, American Made is directed by Doug Liman and it kind of showed off what the Cruise-Liman partnership can do outside of the Hollywood action flair like Edge Of Tomorrow.
One thing that I did not quite enjoy here was Liman's use of close-ups, zooming in more than a few times on Cruise's face. It didn't help when I watched this on a defective screen in Times Cineplex (Screen 3), which added to the distractions.
Fortunately enough, the pacing of the movie was always on point; and the story itself was interesting enough to keep the attention. Cruise's acting was always of high quality and, take away action sequences, he is still a great actor.
I also thought the trailers sold this movie quite well. They gave enough of the drug cartel with the big name of Pablo Escobar but did not give away anything major in the plot. And the third act was really enjoyable as I did not know what actually happened to Cruise's character in real life.
What I would have loved to see more of were Jesse Plemons' character as he did not add enough of what he's so great at to the movie. Plemons is popping up in a lot of things and he is great to watch. And there was also another great character JB that was acted to perfect annoyance by Caleb Landry Jones. He was another highlight of the movie.
What Liman did great was also to keep the tone of the humour up right until the ending even though the ending was not funny at all. But in doing so, there was a very consistent tone throughout.
