[Review] mother! (6/10)
Darren Aronofsky rarely misses, but with mother!, I believe he did.
But even when he does misses, as in the case of mother!, he still managed to bring some notable values to the movie. One of them is the quality of acting from the actors like Jennifer Lawrence because many X-Men fans have been complaining that she phoned in her performance in Apocalypse, while she did not create much of a dent in Passengers.
She was clearly back in form in this movie, playing a younger wife to an older Javier Bardem; and convincing the audience that she could restore a burnt-down house back to a home - though I am still unsure of this tiny point in the story.
There were also great performances from Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, Brian Gleeson and Domhnall Gleeson; even though for the Gleesons they were only in it for a brief amount of time, but the younger sibling gave quite a memorable performance.
Pfeiffer's role was definitely a juicier one, but a lot of insinuations did not materialize into anything. And that was my biggest problem with the movie. Certain things were introduced, such as a big wound on Harris' abdomen or that hole in the floor, they were never addressed again to have that subplot completed.
Also, that crazy third act! There must be a better way for Aronofsky to show what he wanted with it. For someone who is unfamiliar with the religion and have no idea what's what, I could not understand what was happening even though I could tell it was very biblical. And if you are going to make a movie with heavy religious overtones, the general audience would still need to understand it without looking it up.
A lot of potential as a thriller but in the end it just got too messy, and probably too religious too, for me. But at least those weird movie posters make a whole lot of sense now.
