[Review] Rough Night (4/10)
For someone like Scarlett Johansson's caliber, she could have done anything she wanted in between filming for Marvel's tentpole movies. And Rough Night was what she chose.
She could learn a thing or two from fellow Avenger Chris Evans, whose little project Gifted made some waves (which will be reviewed in my next post).
Rough Night was a little rough. The first half with the fun and games were nice to see, as the chemistry between the five girls, Johansson, Jillian Bell, Zoe Kravitz, Kate McKinnon and Ilana Glazer; brought in the small laughters. And McKinnon was a great scene stealer, playing an Aussie and her accent always made me laugh.
The cameos from Ty Burrell and Demi Moore (the latter somehow still looked fantastic) injected a lot of humour in those few scenes.
But everytime we shifted back to Johansson's character's fiance, played by a very uninspired choice in Paul W. Downs, the pacing slowed down so much that I did not even care for the movie anymore. His character arc was lame and boring.
So by the second half I was already half way checked out and just waited for the movie to end. Even though it ended well with a tiny plot twist, which I'm sure we have all seen it coming.
