[Review] Gifted (8.5/10)
Gifted would not have been what it was without the pure talent of Mckenna Grace. She reminded me of Dakota Fanning in I Am Sam.
Her innocence and acting ability put her right up there with her co-stars Chris Evans, Octavia Spencer and Jenny Slate. She was really the best part of the movie, bringing all that emotions which was hard to fathom how such a young girl would be able to tap into.
But I would push for a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Linsay Duncan. She set an even higher bar for pure acting and really made me feel for her character when she was set up as the villain of the story.
I was never really a fan of Slate but this has to be her best work. Actually, the weakest link this time was Evans. Playing opposite young Grace who gave so much emotion, I wanted more from Evans to really push it over the edge. But he was a solid supporter for Grace and gave her a lot of room to perform.
Barring The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which wasn't completely his fault as I still loved the relationship arc that he created for the two main characters; Marc Webb has not made a bad movie. He really knows how to direct relationships be it romantically or otherwise. I even enjoyed the neighbour relationship between Evans and Spencer here.
I'll be looking out for more of Webb's work for sure, and his next one will be The Only Living Boy In New York - which I am unfortunately not a fan of its first trailer.
