[Review] Happy Death Day (6.5/10)

The trailer for Happy Death Day never interested me and I never intended to spend hard earned money on it. But as the reviews came out and they were mostly positive, plus there weren't anything else playing that's worth checking out, so I thought I would give this a try.

I wouldn't say I was glad I watched it, but it has its merits. For one, it really played like Groundhog Day with a slasher twist; and if done well, it naturally would entertain. And Christopher Landon has done it well.

He kept the pacing consistent, making sure things moved along nicely and things kept happening. Also, there was that mystery element of "whodunnit" that kept the audience guessing.

Jessica Rothe also made this movie worked. She carried the whole thing because the camera was on her the whole time and she had enough charm and talent and looks to pull it off.

The writing by Scott Lobdell also had a lot of nice punches, creating a few characters that were memorable like the sorority leader Danielle, who had some funny lines.

But I thought the movie still suffered from the usual horror flick weaknesses. Like how could the killer appear in a room that has been boarded? That was just impossible without going into supernatural.

As for the ending, I did not like the way things played out and it was quite a leap for Rothe's character.

Also, what made Groundhog Day such a great classic was the fact that Bill Murray's character took days to make himself better - something that we the audience are able to bring home the message with us. This movie tried it, and literally gave up.

Still, this movie was better than I thought it would be and I did not regret going for it.
