[Review] A Ghost Story (8.5/10)

I was not looking forward to A Ghost Story after seeing its trailer, but once the movie started, I could not peel my eyes away from the screen.

The movie uses a different, squarish format; and it worked wonderfully for the story it was telling. The atmosphere, the background music and the quietness of certain scenes; all felt like they were masterfully designed.

Getting to know the characters of Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara were so effortless throughout the movie, and it was a slow process so some patience is definitely required. And also certain scenes went on for far longer than required but they did set the mood and pacing. Like the first time the ghost appeared, or that powerful scene when Mara just broke down eating a whole pie on the floor.

Writer and director David Lowery took quite a huge risk on this movie, but he was very clear with his vision. And this movie came out much better than his previous big budget movie with Walt Disney Pictures, Pete's Dragon.

The only part which I thought was a distraction from the quietness of the movie was towards the end when a party was taking place in the house and Will Oldham came on with a monologue that felt more misplaced than impactful.

But if you were able to follow the movie right until the last scene, watching that last scene with the ghost was like taking a bullet to the heart. What a great concept to end the story.
