[Review] Call Me By Your Name (8/10)
Call Me By Your Name boasted quite a few great performances from its great cast.
First of all, young Timothee Chalamet was just fantastic in this movie. How did he manage to pull the performance off with innocence and that level of emotion was just beyond me. I am rooting for him this award season.
Second was Armie Hammer who definitely gave one of his best performances of his career. Michael Stuhlbarg was also a great supporting actor here, but when is he ever not?
This story was slow to build up but every scene served a purpose and built on each character. Plus the direction of Luca Guadagnino paced the movie so consistently. And he gave a lot of breadth to the location that he was shooting in, be it the small town, the lake, or inside the house. The audience always had a sense of space watching his scenes.
And the location was another great addition to the story. The house away from the town, the town that is away from the city, and the quaintness of it all, from the locations to the beautiful story; you get a sense of relaxation that you can forget about everything else and just immerse yourself into the film.
The only complaint that I had was towards the end when Stuhlbarg's character made a tiny revelation, which I thought was not really needed even though it helped the audience to understand his empathy.
That final shot of Chalamet, that was the single most powerful shot of the whole year; right after that final scene from A Ghost Story.
