[Review] Okja (8/10)

Okja started off a little wonky, but once the pet pig has been kidnapped, that's when everything turns good.

Right off the bat, when we saw Jake Gyllenhaal's character - and what an incredibly unrecognizable portrayal again by Gyllenhaal - panting and complaining climbing up the hill to the secluded home of Okja and her caregiver, played expertly by An Seo Hyun; there was no way that little film crew could pull Okja down the hill against her will. I really despise storytellers who do this.

And unfortunately this time it was Bong Joon Ho who decided to take the lazy way out. So that disappointed me quite a lot, coming from such an acclaimed director.

But once we met up with the "Animal Liberation Front" led by Paul Dano, Steven Yuen and Lily Collins, the story started to ramp up as things started to get more interesting.

Tilda Swinton also provided another great, villainous character; and she and Gyllenhaal's acting looked like they both jumped out from a manga series - very over-the-top and animated, but never cheapened their performances.

The second and third act both had very dark turns, nothing unexpected from Bong. But it was the ending that really pained the heart, even for a made-up creature which looked completely realistic.

Okja surprisingly was a really high quality movie that was made for TV.
