[Review] A Quiet Place (8/10)

A sequel in spirit of 2016's Don't Breathe, A Quiet Place is one of those movies that you know exactly how you feel about it immediately walking out of the cinema. There's not a lot left to discuss to come to another conclusion because everything has been laid out quite clearly.

John Krasinski has done wonders with crafting a super suspenseful movie with only a few verbal dialogue. The thrills came from situations and buildups, and not cheap scares - which there was only in one instance, I kept count.

Watching it, the silence in the cinema was even more than the movie. Actually the silence was so loud that you could feel the tension in the air every time something was about to happen onscreen, silently. The silence in the movie made the silence in the cinema even more dramatic.

And that was the beauty in Krasinski's direction. There were intricate details that spoke volumes about what his character was struggling with, which in one subplot was his love for his daughter. The distance he kept from her but still working on her hearing aid.

I am unsure whether this was intentionally done in complete subtlety or Krasinski's directing skill has not matured enough to give the revelation more weight, or was it because of the writing. But it all came together just fine.

And that was also because of the great cast assembled. Emily Blunt was perfect in bringing the emotional weight. Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds were great in their roles.

My biggest gripe was the writers, which included Krasinski, decided to introduce a subplot which I thought we could have done without. This particular subplot went against everything that the title of this movie was about and it just did not fit into the mentality of the characters given the situation they were in.

Also, I would have liked to see what happened in that bath tub; but Krasinski chose not to show it probably because he could not do it justice.

But because of the direction and a premise that has never been done before, this was just completely a joy to sit through. My heart was pounding in complete silence.
