[Editorial] James Mangold To Direct A Boba Fett Movie For Star Wars

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that director of Logan, James Mangold, has been confirmed to write and direct a previously confirmed movie for Star Wars, which centers around the bounty hunter Boba Fett.

Not much else has surfaced but there is also a rumour that Mangold will be reteaming with Logan producer and Dark Phoenix writer-director Simon Kinberg to co-write for this new movie.

No official announcements, casting news or release dates have been released as of yet.

Also, Lucasfilm is currently in talks with The Hours' Stephen Daldry to direct an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone movie as well. This once again shows that Lucasfilm is still shying away from new up-and-coming directors, or add a little diversity for a diversified perspective on movie-making. They currently keep going back to the same old formula for success.

Although Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired from Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Josh Trank from the untitled Boba Fett movie years ago; these were names that brought excitement and creativity.

Mangold, to me, is definitely a great choice after the success he has had with Logan. Daldry on the other hand, I hope, won't come to pass. How about a younger and fresher director like a Ryan Coogler?

Take a chance, Lucasfilm. Sure, Solo was a great movie. But let's test the waters a little bit more. And sure, there has been bad precedents for this so I totally understand Lucasfilm wanting to play it safe a little bit more after the disasters that were Lord and Miller (and maybe to a certain extent Gareth Edwards as well), but let's not be afraid to try again. Or give it a good mix of directors with different backgrounds and perspectives.

There is so much that a studio can learn from Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios. If there is no nurturing, then there is no future.
