[Review] Solo: A Star Wars Story (8/10)
There is so much goodness in Solo: A Star Wars Story - a movie that was failure in the making, and it turned out to be one of the better movies from this new generation.
Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo was great. From the first time he appeared onscreen, there was no doubt nor hesitation that this is Han. It's not about how he looked, it's about who he was and I could see him as the younger version of the Han that we have come to know and love.
Donald Glover was probably the best thing about this movie because he was perfect as Lando Calrissian. He oozed smoothness and confidence, he was debonair and irresistible. And yet at the same time, a scoundrel. Glover has done wonders recreating this character, and at times, even sounded exactly like Billy Dee Williams.
I really enjoyed Woody Harrelson as Beckett. He brought in his usual flair and charisma, and the way he used his guns looked really cool. Though a predictable character, he was still a very interesting mix to have. And his introduction with his crew (Thandie Newton and Jon Favreau) came in the middle of a great war scene that I would have loved to see more of.
The droid of the movie, L3-37 voiced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, again like other droids of this new generation, came with massive personality that was fun to be around.
Paul Bettany as Dryden Vos was one of the scarier antagonists we've had who not only was smooth but also pure evil. A great villain for this movie.
Qi'ra played by Emilia Clarke was the weakest link. Not so much on the character but I thought it was Clarke's inconsistent acting that threw me off. It's like she can only go two different extremes, one is Daenerys and the other is that horrible one in Me Before You, with the latter suddenly popping up in the tender moments with Han.
Ron Howard came in to save the day and that was exactly what he did. Even though everything onscreen was "safe", they were all solid movie-making. And that is what the franchise need right now.
The whole movie felt like old-school Star Wars and it is never wrong to harken back to that style of the beloved trilogy. There probably wasn't anything that was spectacular about the movie that I can recall apart from that cameo. But I did tear up just a little when Chewbacca sat down on the co-pilot seat for the first time beside Han and John Williams' score kicked into full glory, and immediately my memory went back to Harrison Ford's Han Solo and how we have already witnessed the character's death.
Another one of my favourite scenes was when Han and Chewie saw the Millenium Falcon for the first time and the orchestra playing in the background, that was special.
Apart from these, fight scenes were good, other characters such as Enfys Nest and Moloch were unfortunately forgettable. The Kessell Run, too, was forgettable because there wasn't enough about the actual "run".
This was a great standalone Star Wars story, and I like it so much that I am hoping that some of these characters will have a continuation of their story in future movies seeing as how it ended.
And, yes, I would like to see Ehrenreich as Solo again very soon, which possibly will be a Lando movie?
