Here is a very interesting and unprecedented case. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Disney's upcoming fantasy, The Nutcracker And The Four Realms, will have two directors credited to it.
The film was originally directed by Lasse Hallstrom; but after Tom McCarthy did some rewrites, Disney has ordered for extensive reshoots which Hallstrom was unable to squeeze into his schedule as it will take 32 days to complete.
In order to meet the release date, Disney has brought in Joe Johnston to shepherd the reshoots while Hallstrom will later return to guide the post production process.
In any film, there can only be one name to the director credit and the Directors Guild of America usually would step in to decide that should there be any dispute - whether if a director is being replaced midway or like in this case, a second director is brought in for reshoots. The exception being that both directors have already a history of working together (the Cohen Brothers, the Russo Brothers, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Chad Stahelski and David Leitch), and animated movies apparently.
However, in the case of The Nutcracker, the Guild did not get to decide for the movie because Hallstrom offered to share directing credits with Johnston and the studio submitted the revision to the Guild which subsequently got approved.
To take a different case, the upcoming Bohemian Rhapsody which saw the firing of Bryan Singer and the hiring of Dexter Fletcher midway through filming will have Singer's name still attached to the directing credit. The DGA ruled in Singer's favour because Fletcher only worked on the movie for 16 days, a period that is significantly less than Singer's original effort in it.
