The Academy Awards 'Postpones' Popular Category Implementation
Perhaps the most sensible thing to do after announcing the atrocious "Most Popular Movie" category for the upcoming 91st Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have confirmed that it will not be happening this year.
My guess is, at all.
It was a huge mistake to even come up with this idea. Reports had it that it was ABC that pressured the Academy to include it so that movies from their parent company, Disney, like Black Panther, has a shot of winning.
But as it stands, even Marvel Studios want no part in it as they are now vying for the coveted Best Picture award.
There actually is no point in creating this category in the first place. It cheapens the whole Oscars which is supposed to be the industry standards. And just because the "seniors" does not understand popular movies and their quality to be included in Best Picture, they went and create another category just for these movies. It's all very silly and condescending even.
And it really shows that the Oscars has become a joke.
Get your act together, Academy.
Now I am not saying Black Panther should be nominated in next year's Oscars because to me, it is also not a Best Picture quality. But let's have a more serious talk about how to move forward to include genre movies into the Best Picture category that is fair and right.
