[Review] Halloween (3.5/10)

After 40 years, there really is no enticing mystery left surrounding the character of Michael Myers. And slasher movies do not belong in this day and age anymore. They should have ended 15 years ago unless you bring in a fresh concept like what The Purge did.

Myers was never made out to be supernatural or even the slightest inkling of meta-human. So with the passing of time, he should have aged. Today, he should be over 60 years of age; and hence, he should act the part. People around him should treat him as such.

There was no way Myers was still capable of doing what he did. And he did not even attempt at running and chasing, so why couldn't his would-be victims outrun him? His only "superpower" is that he is a very tall man. That should not mean he is able to choke hold another person.

The script itself was terrible. "I'm a doctor, lock your doors," is just an example of one of the most absurd lines we got from its characters.

Sometimes it became frustrating because the characters did not seem to have common sense. Judy Greer's character was in the safe room with so many guns and she did not seem to want to pick one up. Jamie Lee Curtis' character has been preparing for this day for 40 years, altering her home so that it became a trap. But those trap did not seem to serve any purpose. And she picked a long rifle instead of an easier-to-handle revolver when in close quarters, making her seem less prepared than we were led to believe.

Production wise, I suppose it was alright. David Gordon Green and Danny McBride should have come up with a better script than to have been satisfied with "Myers somehow escapes a prison bus on Halloween and went on to finish what he started 40 years ago, only to find Jamie Lee Curtis turning the tables on him".
