Tagged as from the same producers as Train To Busan, that is the whole marketing and it got me into the cinema. Well, that and the zombie genre.
This was another very well made zombie movie that did not rely on just the zombies but a very competently thought-out piece of story.
And the character arcs of the main hero and villain were very well written that it became engaging for the audience, partly because of the great performances of Bin Hyun and Jang Dong Gun respectively. There was also a great supporting cast in Jo Woo Jin, but it was Jung Man Sik's comedic act that stole the whole show.
There wasn't any strong female presence in this one, and it was a real pity to see Lee Sun Bin's character not having more to do, as her introduction was quite memorable with her being the only archer in the group.
Also, this happened to be Kim Joo Hyuk's final movie before a tragic accident that took his life last October.
The comedy really worked throughout the first two acts whenever we needed some levity. The drama and the story were quite easy to follow, with characters that we can learn to get behind - especially when I don't know who the real movie stars are, being a foreign film.
The only cracks came in the third act when there were a couple of times you can poke holes at the decisions that the characters made, especially when having the need to light the fire.
But this was quite an enjoyable watch, and once again the Korean cinema really knows how to pull at your heartstrings; and this one came with the death of a super minor character that somehow worked.
And this being only the third movie by director Kim, he is showing a lot of potential.
