[Review] Upgrade (8/10)

Title - Upgrade
Studio - Netflix, Blumhouse Productions
Starring - Logan Marshall-Green, Betty Gabriel, Benedict Hardie, Harrison Gilbertson
Writer - Leigh Whannell
Director - Leigh Whannell
Release - 1 June 2018

Leigh Whannell has good stories to tell; unfortunately as a director he still has some ways to go.

The first act was like a snail's crawl. Coupled that with a bad choice in the actress that played Marshall-Green's wife who seemed to be acting in a world of her own. It was not easy to sit through.

But once the upgrade was completed, that was when the fun really began. And the way Whannell shot the action sequences was something that may not be new but looked completely new, and suited the storytelling.

The sci-fi element felt fresh even though the premise was probably as old as the 21st century. But the execution and bits of violence sprinkled in really made it very enjoyable.

Again, this was a story of man versus AI, and it does not yet feel dated.

In the same year when we get Tom Hardy in Venom, and Hardy's lookalike Marshall-Green in a small budget sci-fi movie from Blumhouse with a premise filled with similarities with the former; who would have thought Upgrade would kick Venom's ass so hard.
