[Review] The Old Man & The Gun (8.5/10)

Title - The Old Man & The Gun
Studio - Fox Searchlight Pictures
Starring - Robert Redford, Sissy Spacek, Casey Affleck, Danny Glover, Tika Sumpter, Tom Waits
Writer - David Lowery
Director - David Lowery
Release - 28 September 2018

When I saw the first trailer, I knew I had to see this movie.

Not only touted as Robert Redford's swan song, but it showed Redford as a dapper gentleman; which is what Redford naturally is. So I was thinking, this could be a great role for him.

And indeed it was. But somehow I kept thinking he was also the director. However, David Lowery has that credit. And he directed Redford like Redford would direct himself.

The cast here has got to be one of the year's best ensemble. Sissy Spacek was so good that one of the best scenes was her and Redford sitting outside her porch and just discussing the meaning of life.

Casey Affleck is always great in this type of small movies. Danny Glover was great in his smaller role, but I thought Tom Waits was outstanding. This was the second time I watched him delivery a great role, the first was in the Coen Brothers' The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs.

One of the weak point here was unfortunately Lowery's script writing. No conversation was ever drawn out to achieve more of an emotional impact. I felt like sometimes the scenes were too short - just as I was about to get into the emotion of it, the scene was cut to the next one.

However, Lowery is still an interesting director to follow. Out of his last three movies, I have really enjoyed this and A Ghost Story. Only Pete's Dragon left me wanting more, and it possibly showed that Lowery still excels in smaller stories and production value. We would have to see how he grow from here because his next project is back with Disney for the live-action Peter Pan.
