So Game Night was not the only breakout comedy of 2018. Blockers was such a fun watch.
John Cena definitely stood out here, leading the comedy and held his own right beside comedic veterans like Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz.
The jokes under the direction of Kay Cannon worked so well, and this was her directorial debut. She previously only wrote for the Pitch Perfect franchise, and now she has taken a step back from writing and focused on directing. Her comedic timing in this movie was very impressive.
And she had three, no six including the kids, very talented cast to work with. Barinholtz, for me stole, the movie. Even though billed as the third lead, he provided the most fun, being the opposite extreme to Mann's soberness while Cena fluctuates in between.
This was also a very good showcase of Cena's capability as almost every frame had him in it. And he did not disappoint.
A lot of the gags got me laughing out loud, and very surprised that there were such unexpected moments to be had.
A couple of scenes slowed down the pacing of the movie a little in the final act, and I wished they had had a different and funnier payoff. But overall, I had a lot of fun.
This was a good example of how the trailers were not able to sell the movie well enough; or that the trailers hid all the good stuff; and that was the right move.
