Title - You Were Never Really Here

Starring - Joaquin Phoenix, John Doman, Ekaterina Samsonov
Writer - Lynne Ramsay
Director - Lynne Ramsay
Release - 6 April 2018
Another acting masterclass from Joaquin Phoenix, this time under the guidance of Lynne Ramsay who is following up her previous movie We Need To Talk About Kevin from 2011.
Ramsay has a very unique way of storytelling, in which the audience really need to focus and follow what is happening onscreen; otherwise you might get lost quite easily.
But with the demand of that focus, the reward can actually be very sweet. Her framing of certain shots with her cinematographer Thomas Townend captured some really magnificent shots. They didn't come very often but when they do, the picture onscreen can seem three-dimensional.
Phoenix's acting here was another level because, portraying someone with a very injured left shoulder, he has made his body looked distorted even with a certain slump highlighting the slight disfigurement.
But it was also his body language and facial expressions that, even without dialogue, you could tell his emotions.
Ramsay's style of storytelling very easily would not suit almost everyone because the progression was actually very slow. A lot of scenery shots that took their time so that visuals could sink in proper. An amount of patience was required, but thankfully the running time was only about 90 minutes.
