I'm very late this year because I just didn't have enough time to catch up with the big Oscar movies. I still haven't seen If Beale Street Could Talk, Vice and At Eternity's Gate.
I will start off with...
Honorable Mentions:
- Won't You Be My Neighbor (8/10)
We are not worthy Fred Rogers. Just to see the pure kindness of this person is worth watching the documentary.
- The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs (8/10)
If the Coen Brothers had strung the individual movies together to show they happened in the same universe, it would have felt more like a movie proper.
- Blackkklansman (8/10)
Comedic but definitely an eye-opener, and another good look into the depth of racism and the white supremacists.
- Hereditary (8/10)
One of the scariest movies I have seen in a while, and it's pure horror.
- Black Panther (8/10)
Great performances all around and a great story focusing on one tradition.
10) Solo: A Star Wars Story (8/10)
The re-watchability of this movie is off the charts. If it pops up on TV, I would be glued.
9) Deadpool 2 (8.5/10)
A very consistent follow-up to the original and almost as good, too.
8) Teen Titans Go! To The Movies (8.5/10)
An incredibly surprising and original take on the comic book genre, and I laughed so many times.
7) Incredibles 2 (8.5/10)
A great come-back and another great commentary on what goes on now in the world, while bringing back the family values like the first movie.
6) Eighth Grade (8.5/10)
If I had a vote, I would have given her a spot in this year's Best Actress nomination. Such an intimate story that every one should watch.
5) Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (8.5/10)
Such an achievement in CGI and one of the best stories about Spider-Man we have ever gotten.
4) Mission: Impossible - Fallout (8.5/10)
How did the team behind this franchise keep upping the ante and topping themselves from the previous installment. I really don't know where the story will go from here. Space!
3) Green Book (9/10)
What a genuine and feel-good tale that brought two different backgrounds together where each party taught and learnt from the other.
2) Avengers: Infinity War (9/10)
Biased? Sure. But again, I can go back to this movie over and over again. The culmination of the last 10 years starts here and ends in the next movie.
1) Bohemian Rhapsody (9.5/10)
An achievement by Bryan Singer, which is why it is so sad to see this almost-great director having such a disturbing history, alleged or otherwise. But a great cast, great story, great performances, and such good editing that you couldn't tell it was two directors.
