[Review] Brightburn (7/10)
Title - Brightburn
Studio - Sony Pictures
Starring - Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn
Writer - Brian Gunn, Mark Gunn
Director - David Yarovesky
Release - 24 May 2019
When it is a small movie with James Gunn's signature on it, you can bet it will feel like a B-movie.
Written by his brothers and directed by probably a good friend (who appeared as a Ravager in the first Guardians Of The Galaxy), the style of moviemaking also felt like Gunn.
I was actually more surprised by the amount of gore, followed by the actual quality of storytelling.
This was a straight up horror with enough story beats to really entertain. There were good suspenseful moments and then there were moments that you really felt the pain of Elizabeth Banks who played the mother.
Then again, there were also very illogical script writing, when the boy visited the aunt who didn't want to let him in the house and instead let the 12-year-old walk back home in the dark in the "very late" hour. Moments like these drove me up the wall because they could do easily be fixed.
There was also another completely useless dream sequence that served no purpose other than for a scare, but it wasn't even scary.
And I also wished Jackson A. Dunn was a better actor, so much more could have had if he could have given a more emotional performance.
Still, I really liked this idea for a movie and I would not mind seeing more. Perhaps to delve into what the ending wanted to setup where another frequent James Gunn collaborator showed up.
