[Review] Roman J Israel, Esq (6.5/10)
Title - Roman J. Israel, Esq.
Studio - Sony Pictures
Starring - Denzel Washington, Colin Farrell, Carmen Ejogo
Writer - Dan Gilroy
Director - Dan Gilroy
Release - 17 November 2017
Denzel Washington turned in another Oscar nominated performance but the movie itself failed to garner any kind of positive buzz throughout its run.
And that's probably because this script by Dan Gilroy was not as entertaining as his previous critically acclaimed movie, Nightcrawler. (And with his latest Velvet Buzzsaw also not getting good word of mouth, Nightcrawler feels like beginner's luck.)
Washington's performance no doubt was great as always, still there were moments when I was confused as to whether his character was supposed to be socially awkward or not - partly because he showed a very confident public speaker, and partly because Washington is just so charismatic.
Colin Farrell and Carmen Ejogo both added layers to the movie but again, their characters were not flushed out enough in Gilroy's script; which felt like a running theme throughout.
And the script also tried to tackle another sub plot that seemed to be more juicy and almost bleed into like a biopic feel, but then it dropped back down to something that felt trivial and predictable.
