[Review] If Beale Street Could Talk (8/10)
Title - If Beale Street Could Talk
Studio - Annapurna Pictures
Starring - Kiki Layne, Stephan James, Regina King, Coleman Domingo, Teyona Paris, Brian Tyree Henry, Dave Franco, Ed Skrein, Diego Luna, Pedro Pascal
Writer - Barry Jenkins
Director - Barry Jenkins
Release - 30 November 2018
My first Barry Jenkins movie, and I found his pacing a little slow. But that is his style and it's better to have a style than not.
Pros:
- First off, it's the beautiful cinematography by James Laxton. He also did Moonlight with Jenkins so both movies will probably look the same. And this also added to the romance of the story.
- The casting was perfect. From Regina King who gave a brilliant performance, to Dave Franco who appeared once. They all worked perfectly.
- Also adapted by Jenkins, as a storyteller, he has a great way of moving in and out of the present and the past; with nothing that distracted from the story progression.
Cons:
- The aforementioned slower pacing stylistically, plus a very soft final act and ending that just didn't satisfy me - understandably that this was an adapted story.
Conclusion:
A sweeping romance worth watching.
