[Review] Bombshell (8.5/10)

Release - 20 December 2019

This whole movie was really difficult to watch because of how sleazy things could get in certain scenes. Even right off the top with Charlize Theron's monologue, there was that one comment about her dress and I thought, yeah here we are from the female / victim's point of view. These are the things that men will very seldom get to suffer from.

It's not just Theron's face that made her look different, but it's the acting under all that prosthetics that is giving her another Oscar nomination that is so well deserved. Her performance made her character pop every time she was on screen.

And now that I have seen Margot Robbie's performance, which was really good, I would still give that Best Supporting spot to Zhao Shuzhen from The Farewell. But I am not taking anything away from her.

The casting director was very wise in getting Robbie because she is the most likeable actress right now in Hollywood and it was very easy for our hearts to go out to her at the end of this movie.

Jay Roach's pacing moved very fast and always non-stopping. And it was a great decision because there wasn't any sort of high climax in a story like this but the quick pacing helped in keeping the atmosphere tense and engaging for the audience.

The biggest downside I had was that very important conversation between Theron and Robbie's characters. As an art form I had hoped for something more artistic rather than just flatly spelling everything out for the audience. Some tact in the writing would have been nice to see, but perhaps it was an artistic decision to go flatly because the subject matter had been sugar coated throughout the past that with the "me too" movement now let's just all speak plainly about it.

This movie is rewatchable and would certainly benefit from a second watch as well just because the pacing was so quick, and also just a lot of things that we men really should take note of in order to help our fairer counterparts.
