[Review] Rocketman (3.5/10)
Title - Rocketman
Studio - Paramount Pictures

Writer - Lee Hall
Director - Dexter Fletcher
Release - 17 May 2019
Rocketman feels like a love letter to Elton John's music... but from Elton John himself. And therein lies the problem. The whole movie felt very self-indulgent and very unnecessary - unnecessary because watching it you could tell a lot of things were made up and fictionalized for the movie's sake.
And if you would to read up on his earlier life you would then find that most of his relationships portrayed in this movie were not factual.
But let's talk about the movie on its own merit.
The songs came in randomly with no relations to its lyrics. They didn't come in because that was when he composed those songs. And worst of all, once I realized halfway through the movie, those were not his own words that he was singing. If we wanted to get a feel of why his songs were written the way they were, we would have to delve into the world of the owner of those words; namely his writing partnet Bernie Taupin.
Yes, this movie is not a biopic. It's a musical fantasy that was intended to show the world the only way Elton John wanted the world to see him.
But no doubt, the cast involved were brilliant; none other more so than Taron Egerton who became Elton John. He had not just his looks but also his expressions and the way he moved.
So if, like me, you were wondring why this movie wasn't getting more love from the award ceremonies; it's because this movie was terrible. There were a few times that I wanted to stop watching it and not many movies ever made me feel that way.
Dexter Fletcher is not a bad director. But the material he was given to put onscreen just wasn't anything interesting. However, I can't help but compare this movie to Bohemian Rhapsody in which he helped Bryan Singer to finish shooting the movie. And I would watch that movie for many more times than to ever watch this one again.
