[Review] The Two Popes (7/10)
Title - The Two Popes
Studio - Netflix
Starring - Anthony Hopkins, Jonathan Pryce, Juan Minujin
Writer - Anthony McCarten
Director - Fernando Meirelles
Release - 20 December 2019
The joy of watching this movie was to see the two leads having conversations. I could watch the entire movie with just the two of them talking. Too bad it wasn't one of those movies that was just conversations in one room.
But midway through their conversations were also flashbacks to the younger Bergoglio and his history, or the path that led him to who he was today. I could have done with less of those because the dialogue between Hopkins and Pryce's characters were far more interesting. Especially when the audience slowly learned about who they were.
By the end of the movie, it was easy to only see Hopkins and Pryce as their characters and not the actors playing them. Both actors played their roles so well that you don't need anyone else in the movie to enjoy it.
I also appreciated how, like most movies dealing with cooking there were a lot of emphasis on the process of cooking, this had a lot of emphasis on the beauty of the Vatican church; from the architecture to the artwork within.
However, while I do not take this into rating the movie, it was quite disappointing to find out their conversations before passing of the torch never took place in real life.
