[Editorial] Thoughts On Oscars 2020 Results

The biggest night in movies, the Academy Awards, have come and gone. A lot of results were very predictable but the biggest ones were such a pleasant surprise.

I had a funny feeling that if any one was going to upset 1917, it was Parasite. And lo and behold, it happened. Plus, if any director who was worthy of snatching the coveted prize from Sam Mendes, it was Bong Joon Ho. And he was over the moon.

The very predictable ones were Leading Actor, Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography, Original Score and International Feature. Everyone must have guessed them right.

I actually didn't pick one for Supporting Actress because my choice wasn't there from the beginning, Nainai from The Farewell. She did nab the prize though from the Spirit Award the previous night.

The best speeches was Bong receiving for Directing, where he created a nice moment for Martin Scorsese; and followed a few steps behind by Brad Pitt's acceptance speech.

Worst speeches was probably Joaquin Phoenix's heartfelt but messy and lengthy ramble, followed by Renee Zellweger who almost seemed like she was trying to one-up Phoenix's length.

However, the worst moment was Billie Eilish's singing for the In Memorium section! Am I the only one who heard how terrible her rendition was and that she couldn't even hit the low notes properly? I found myself becoming angry at the end of it because that was such a terrible performance!

But I was surprised that Kobe Bryant and Kirk Douglas made the list this year because I thought there was a cut-off time for these things and both Bryant and Douglas passed way past that period.

Also, I thought the directing for this year's Oscars ceremony was really good. I loved how the cameras were always prepared to cut to whoever the award recipient was mentioning in their acceptance speech. Well done to the director. Oh, and I felt they barely played down recipients this year. Well done once again.

So I've made 13 predictions for this year, and I managed to guess 6 correctly under "will win". As for "my pick", I guessed 7.
