[Review] Sonic The Hedgehog (5/10)

Release - 14 February 2020

This movie was made for kids. It's made the same way as Pokemon Detective Pikachu. In order to enjoy it, you have to first accept this fantasy world the characters live in, and then just go with it.

Fortunately, the story was slightly better than the latter movie mentioned above because the storyline was more straight forward with less characters to worry about. The only fantastical one here was Sonic.

But the best performance was from Jim Carrey who hearkened back to his Pet Detective and Mask days but still never going over-the-top. Even in the ridiculousness he was very controlled. And he had the best lines that I have heard from any movie in a long time.

The CGI, even after the retooling of Sonic, it still looked out of place and weird. But, again, that was the least of this movie's problems. The suspension of disbelief, the leave your brains at the door, that was the source of the problem.

But some parts of the movie had a lot of heart, which was very surprising. And those were the parts that almost won me over.

Neal McDonough looked like he had a lot of scenes ended up on the cutting floor as he was barely in this movie. Tika Sumpter looked like a miscast, probably because she's not great acting with green screen and tennis balls. And I had a hard time believing James Marsden and her were in school together.

Adam Pally was a good addition for humour and Ben Schwartz of course was great as the voice of Sonic.
