This guy should not be someone that you root for. If you had met him in real life, you would have realised that he is so undependable because he is a gambler. And yet, by the end of the movie, that's all I could do, root for him to win.
The Safdie brothers, who had a great speech during the Spirit Awards, did a remarkable job with directing this movie. You could tell they had a sense of style which is always a good thing when you are discovering a director for the first time.
There was a really good cast assembled here, all of whom were accentuated by the style of direction. The humour with the buzzing door, the auction house, escaping debt collectors; all the suspense really came through the screen with the way the Safdie brothers told the story.
In the end, it was still Adam Sandler's mind-blowing performance that carried the movie. None of the Happy Gilmore pouting and screaming, none of the 50 First Dates cool and charming; although there was definitely charm, just of a different kind.
Hope to see more of Sandler doing these sort of serious drama.
