We have not had a good basketball movie in a long time, and this was such a great welcome to the genre. The basketball was just the backdrop, Ben Affleck took this role and really owned it - well, we all know why.
Still, as personal as the role was, this was a really good Affleck performance from start to finish. The story stayed away from cliched tropes and never went to the places that we would expect a story like this to go.
Gavin O'Connor kept the plot points simple and realistic. He also mixed great cinematography with a nice but somber score to maintain the tone throughout the movie.
